What Is Virtual Twilight Photography? How It Works and What It Costs
Virtual twilight photography is a daytime exterior photo that has been edited to look as if it was taken at dusk. An editor replaces the sky, darkens the scene, and adds a warm glow to the windows and lights. It costs $35 per photo with us, needs no extra visit, and must be labeled as digitally altered in California.

What is a virtual twilight?
It is an edit. The photographer takes a normal daytime photo of the home. Afterward, an editor turns it into an evening scene. You will also see it called day-to-dusk, virtual dusk, or a twilight conversion.
A real twilight is different. It is a photograph taken on location in the 20 to 30 minutes after sunset, with the home's lights actually on. Our comparison of virtual and real twilight covers when each is the better choice. This page explains the virtual version.
The daytime photo, from a Carlsbad shoot.
The same photo as a virtual twilight. The sky and the light in the windows were added in editing.
How is a virtual twilight made?
The sky is replaced with a dusk sky, usually deep blue with some warm color near the horizon.
The whole scene is darkened and cooled, so the house and yard match the new sky.
Windows are lit with a warm glow, as if the interior lights were on.
Exterior lights are added or brightened: porch lights, sconces, sometimes path lights.
Reflections and shadows are adjusted so the light looks like it belongs.
Done well, it reads as a real evening photo at thumbnail size. Done badly, it has glowing orange windows, a sky that doesn't match the light on the house, and a lawn that is still in full sun.
Why do agents use it?
It stands out. A dusk exterior looks different from the rows of daytime photos around it in search results.
It costs little. There is no second trip, so the price is a fraction of a real twilight shoot.
It doesn’t depend on the weather. A gray evening or a marine layer doesn’t matter.
It is fast. It comes back with your other photos.
The seller doesn’t have to do anything. No evening appointment, no turning on every light.
It suits most listings for those reasons: a tract home with a clean front elevation, a townhome, a condo building, or any listing that needs to go live this week.
What it can't do is promise a result. A stronger lead photo may earn more clicks. It doesn't decide what the home sells for or how quickly.
Which photos convert well?
Works well
Works poorly
A front exterior with windows facing the camera
A wall of garage doors with no windows
Even daylight with soft shadows
Harsh sun with deep, hard shadows
Blinds open, so windows can be lit believably
Blinds closed or reflective glass
Visible exterior light fixtures
No fixtures to light
A clean sky line: roof against sky
Trees covering most of the sky
Simple front yards
Pools, water, and long views
Pools and views are the weak spots. Water that glows from inside and city lights in the distance are hard to fake convincingly. If those are the home's selling points, book a real twilight.
You don't have to choose the photo yourself. Tell us you want a twilight when you book, and we will shoot the front exterior with the conversion in mind.
What does it cost, and how long does it take?
With us, a virtual twilight is $35 per photo. Two are included in our Signature package. It is delivered the next day with the rest of your photos. Current prices are on the pricing page.
You can also add one to a listing that is already live. If we photographed the home, we can convert an existing daytime exterior without coming back.
Does a virtual twilight have to be disclosed?
Yes, in California. A virtual twilight changes the sky and adds light that wasn't there, which makes it a digitally altered image under AB 723. You need to:
Label the image as digitally altered
Make the original daytime photo available, most simply by placing it right after the twilight in the photo set
The label goes with the image wherever you use it, including social media and print. Your MLS may also have rules about whether an altered image can be the first photo. See which edited photos need disclosure and the AB 723 guide.
We deliver every virtual twilight labeled, with its daytime original.
How should I use it in the listing?
Put it first or second in the photo set, where your MLS allows
Follow it with the daytime original
Use it on the flyer, the sign rider, and the "just listed" card
Post it as a before-and-after on social media, with the label
Use one or two. A set full of dusk photos looks edited
It is a daytime exterior photo edited to look like dusk, with a replaced sky and light added to the windows and fixtures. It is also called day-to-dusk.
How much does a virtual twilight cost?
With Turnkey Media, $35 per photo. Two are included in our Signature package.
Is virtual twilight the same as real twilight?
No. A real twilight is photographed on location at dusk. A virtual twilight is an edit of a daytime photo.
How long does a virtual twilight take?
We deliver it the next day with the rest of your photos.
Do I have to disclose a virtual twilight?
Yes, in California. It is a digitally altered image under AB 723, so it must be labeled and the original daytime photo made available.
Can any photo be turned into a twilight?
Most front exteriors can. Photos with closed blinds, harsh shadows, pools, or long views convert poorly.
