What is virtual twilight photography?
Virtual twilight is a post-production editing technique that transforms a standard daytime exterior photo into a cinematic dusk or blue-hour image. A skilled editor replaces the sky, adds warm interior window glow, enhances landscape lighting, and applies cinematic color grading — creating the emotional impact of a real twilight shoot without a separate session.
Is virtual twilight the same as a real twilight photo shoot?
In a photograph, virtually indistinguishable when done correctly. The key differences: a real twilight shoot captures actual interior light spilling through windows; a virtual edit simulates this. Both require disclosure per MLS guidelines ("photo virtually enhanced"). Results from skilled virtual editors are often superior to real twilight shoots because lighting can be perfected in post.
Do I need to disclose virtual twilight editing?
Yes. California MLS guidelines and the NAR Code of Ethics require that digitally enhanced photos be disclosed as such. Standard practice is to include "Photo virtually enhanced" or "Twilight effect digitally created" in the photo caption. We provide suggested disclosure language with every delivery.
What makes a good source photo for virtual twilight?
The best source photos are taken in even, overcast lighting or during the golden hour preceding twilight — when shadows are soft and the sky still has some color. Direct midday sun with harsh shadows is more challenging but workable. We can assess your photo before you commit to the edit.
How is your virtual twilight different from automated AI apps?
Automated apps apply generic sky replacements without understanding the property's lighting context — they often look synthetic and lack window glow, landscape lighting enhancement, and proper shadow integration. Our edits are done by hand, image by image, by an experienced editor who treats each photo as a bespoke creative project.
Can I use virtual twilight on photos from any photographer?
Yes. Send us exterior photos taken by any professional photographer (or yourself) and we will produce the virtual twilight edit. We recommend photos that are at least 2,000 pixels wide for best results.
